Great news – 482 Visa Holders

Good news that the Dept of Home Affairs has informed us that by the middle of this year regulations will be in place to allow all 482 holders, regardless of what occupation list they have their visa granted from, to apply for PR after 3 years of holding the 482 visa with the same company. If the visa holder’s visa will expire before these regulations come into effect, they are advised to apply for the COVID stream 408 visa. This means that this visa is still also likely to be in effect until at least July this year.

Fortress Australia needs to open its doors to international students

March 2nd, 2021

Whilst the two main political parties bicker over how many Australians should have already come into the country and how to prioritise numbers, one of the country’s most important export industries is being left to languish and potentially perish leaving much unemployment and lost opportunities in its wake.

International education is at breaking point and we need a national approach to temporary and permanent immigration to prevent this $40 billion industry from falling over.

Wings clipped: Overseas student applications ‘nosedive’

November 9, 2020

Applications by foreign citizens to study in Australia have collapsed by more than 80 per cent since March, with the number of international students expected to be half its pre-pandemic total by mid next year.

There are already about 210,000 fewer international students in Australia than would have been expected before Australia shut its borders on March 20 in response to spiralling COVID-19 case numbers, Department of Home Affairs data shows.

MMMigration’s Child Care centre clients featured on SBS World News

October 16th, 2020

One of MMMigration’s Child Care centre clients was featured on SBS world news as well as our client Andrea Obando Alcazar from Colombia, who works for the centre, thus providing her with the opportunity to share her culture and contribute to Australia’s growth. The piece featured changes in last week’s budget to reduce skilled migration and employer sponsorship and areas that have been disadvantaged by the drop in numbers such as child care which relies heavily on a migrant workforce.

We love to see our clients working in the field and contributing to the Australian workforce! We are currently recruiting Child Care workers, if you study or work in the field, get in touch!

ALABC’s purpose is to help our members succeed in doing business in Latin America, therefore an important component of our work is to promote the best policies to advance trade, investment and business engagement with the region.

In keeping with that promise, we recently organised a virtual meeting with Senator Keneally, Shadow Minister for Home Affairs, Madeleine King MP, Shadow Minister for Trade, Anne Stanley MP, Caucus Multicultural Engagement Taskforce Secretary and Peter Khalil MP, Caucus Multicultural Engagement Taskforce Chair, to put forward the views of our members on how our migration settings should be set when the boarders do reopen.

Why immigration will play a fundamental role in Australia’s economic recovery

Smart Company – August 6, 2020

Immigration is key to lifting Australia’s economy out of the red. But is enough being done to encourage people to move to Australia during COVID-19?

Occupations have been removed from the skilled occupation lists, the number of onshore applicants sitting on bridging visas without approvals is too high, and our aged care and agricultural sectors are crying out for workers.

Of course, there is an argument against migration in these times.

International students deserve to be treated like other members of society.

The Canberra Times – July 9, 2020

Back in the beginning of April, as the COVID-19 pandemic impacted Australia, the blunt message from Prime Minister Scott Morrison to international students was “it’s time to go home”. Fast forward to July and the federal government has announced that the return of international students is no longer conditional upon state borders being open – and it appears that recent lockdowns in Melbourne and the border closure between Victoria and NSW will not affect the decision. This is a clear indication that the federal government has realised the full economic impact of the lack of international students coming into Australia since COVID-19 first hit the headlines.
